RSS Upgrades

Posted over 3 years ago in About This Blog.

I've had an RSS feed for the entire blog up for some time now at http://blog.grayproductions.net/index.rss. Yes, I know, it sucked. Several of you emailed me to tell me just how much it sucked.

In my defense, I wrote this blogging engine because I wanted to play around different aspects of how this software could work. Spam prevention was high on that list for me, because it affected me a lot. Not being a feed reader junkie, RSS was less critical to me. I know it was important to you though and I'm trying to make good on my promises, finally.

The number one complaint was that my RSS feeds did not include content, just descriptions. This is fixed. The full article is now in the feed.

I'm not sure how well that's going to work out yet. Regular readers know that I'm terribly wordy, so even just placing the last ten articles in the feed makes it quite large. I don't know how inconvenient that's going to be for you or me yet, but we can try it out for now.

As and added bonus, I've added category specific feeds and article specific feeds that show comments as they come in. Just add .rss to the end of any category or article URL to try these out.

How did I do? Is this the RSS support you've all been wanting? Did I get it right?

Tim Morgan added about 2 hours later:

Yay! Now I can read your blog from my reader. It's a glorious day.

Ryan Bates added about 2 hours later:

Thanks for doing this. Something else you may want to consider (and I recommend) is moving the feed over to feedburner.com. This way you can see a subscriber count/graph and the feed doesn't use up the bandwidth/cpu on your end. There's some other fun tools feedburner provides too.

If you do this though, make sure to do a 301 redirect from your old RSS feed URL to the feedburner one, that way most feed readers will update automatically to the new URL.

Joseph Pecoraro added about 2 hours later:

Thanks!

Kenneth Kalmer added about 20 hours later:

Brilliant, thanks a lot. I agree with Ryan that you should have a look at FeedBurner.

Jim Maher added about 1 year later:

Is the RSS feed still working?

The link

seems to pose problems for both Inetrnet Explorer and Outlook,

James Edward Gray II added about 1 year later:

The feed is currently disabled. I'm rebuilding the blog in my spare time to fix this and several other issues. The recent birth of my daughter has just cut "in my spare" time to a pretty small value. I'll get it finished up ASAP though.
